Lime Mortar – Dry Slaked Premixed

Made in Cumbria, our lime mortar is produced via the dry slaked hot mix method. Mixed at ratio of 3:1 (sand:quicklime) and supplied unhaired.

The lime mortar is used for backing coats of lime plaster and lime render, scratch coats will need hair or fibres adding to the mix when knocking the mortar back up for reinforcement. Also used for internal and external building/bedding, pointing and parging/torching.

For internal final finish see Lime Plaster (Eden Skim Coat).

Benefits of Dry Slaked Hot Lime Mortar:

  • Exceptionally workable – creamy, sticky, and easy to compact into joints, even on awkward stonework.
  • High bond strength – the fine plate like structure of well slaked lime gives excellent adhesion to stone and brick.
  • Breathable and salt tolerant – ideal for older buildings; allows moisture to move and evaporate rather than trapping it.
  • Low shrinkage – reduces cracking during curing, especially compared to NHL only mixes.
  • Long “green” period – stays workable for longer, allowing better finishing and tooling.
  • Better carbonation – the open pore structure and retained moisture help it carbonate more evenly and fully.
  • Thermal flexibility – copes well with movement in traditional masonry without becoming brittle.
  • More forgiving in poor weather – hot mixed mortars (even when dry‑slaked) tolerate damp, cold, and variable conditions better than pure NHL.
  • Authentic to historic fabric – matches the performance and appearance of traditional mortars used in pre 20th century buildings.
  • Excellent for conservation work – compatible with soft stone, handmade brick, and mixed fabric walls where harder mortars cause damage.

Lime Mortar Colour Options (for pointing)

Three colour options are available as premixed lime mortars, these would just need to be knocked up before use and pozzolan added if needed:

  • 2 Eden Fine Yellow – Appleton Yellow sand blended with limestone dust and -3mm kibble quicklime
  • 3 Eden Fine Red – Red plastering sand blended with limestone dust and -3mm kibble quicklime
