Hessian
Hessian is an ideal material to protect lime mortars from drying out to quickly as well as keeping direct sunlight and rain away. Used with other materials they can also give protection against frost.
Available in 8.9oz:
Roll (8.9oz) – 50m x 1.83m
Also supplied by the running metre
Put the hessian up as soon as you can and bring it down the wall as much as practically possible. Do not start wetting it until the mortar has turned “leathery” once it gets to that stage wet the hessian but not with a jetted hosepipe.
Extra care should be taken on the corner of buildings, vertical boards should be used to try and protect the corners from the wind. This way the board takes the brunt of the wind, and
hopefully the corner will be protected.
Keep the mortar covered over for 2 weeks, keep the sheet damp if in hot /windy conditions.
If working over the spring/autumn/winter months, it should not be necessary to wet the hessian as there will be enough humidity in the air and more of chance of a frost.
