Lime Mortar – Premixed
Made in Cumbria, our lime mortar is produced via the dry slaked hot mix method. Mixed at ratio of 3:1 (sand:quicklime) and supplied unhaired.
The lime mortar is used for backing coats of lime plaster and lime render, scratch coats will need hair or fibres adding to the mix when knocking the mortar back up for reinforcement. Also used for internal and external building/bedding, pointing and parging/torching (add a Pozzolan for external use or damp internal conditions).
For internal final finish see Lime Plaster (Eden Skim Coat).
Lime Mortar Colour Options (for pointing)
Three colour options are available as premixed lime mortars, these would just need to be knocked up before use and pozzolan added if needed:
- 1 Eden Standard – Nosterfield sharp sand and -3mm kibble quicklime
- 2 Eden Fine Yellow – Appleton Yellow sand blended with limestone dust and -3mm kibble quicklime
- 3 Eden Fine Red – Red plastering sand blended with limestone dust and -3mm kibble quicklime
Colour Examples
1 Eden Standard 2 Eden Fine Yellow 3 Eden Fine Red
Lime Mortar Coverage:
- Render/plaster scratch coats @15mm thick = 39kg/m²
- Render/plaster float coats @10mm thick = 26kg/m²
- Re-pointing stonework = Approximately 26kg/m²
- Re-pointing brickwork (assuming 10mm wide x 20mm deep joint) = Approximately 8kg/m² (including 10% waste)
- Brick laying – 1000kg of mortar will lay 900-1000 bricks (no waste allowed)
- Stone bedding – 1000kg of mortar will bed approximately 5 m³ of stone
- Roof parging/torching – Approximately 22kg of lime mortar (dependent on slate & lath).
Pozzolan
Argical-M 1000 Pozzolan is helpful when applying hot lime mixes in damp, frost prone or exposed locations. The addition of Argical to hot lime mixes will increase compressive strength which helps to offer additional protection during the carbonation period.
Traditionally, volcanic ash, brick dust and other forms of burnt clays were used as additives in hot lime mixes and today this is refined in the form of Argical-M 1000. The term ‘pozzolan’ originates from the Italian town of Pozzuoli where volcanic ash was added during Roman times.
We recommend adding a pozzolan between 5% – 10% by volume depending on the time of year, exposure and use.
Quantity required for gauging into pre-mixed mortars:
- 5% by volume (1/20) – One tonne of mortar requires 12.5kg of Argical-M 1000
- 10% by volume (1/10) – One tonne of mortar requires 25kg of Argical-M 1000
Quantity required when making hot mix mortars on site:
- 5% by volume – For every measure of Quicklime added to the mix, add approx 20% of the same measure of Argical-M 1000
- 10% by volume – For every measure of Quicklime added to the mix, add approx 40% of the same measure of Argical-M 1000
