Lime renders/harls and plasters need a breathable paint or lime wash as final coat. Lime wash was always done via a hot wash- slaking the lime on site and applying straight away. The lime wash can have dyes/pigments added to give different shades. Lime wash is put on in thin coats one day between coats. Lime wash can be applied once the mortar is firm enough to take a brush. Lime wash also acts as a disinfectant as farmers always used to lime wash their cow byres and calf sheds to keep the bugs down! Lime wash acts as a conserver of the render it is good practice to do external walls every 3 or 4 years, but in some cases it lasts for decades.
Limewash is put on hot, it is a much better practice compared to adding water to lime putty. The secret to limewash is to damp down the wall before each coat, keeping the layers thin, doing one coat/day and wearing the correct PPE. External lime wash should be done in the Summer months, but not on really hot or windy days, lime wash needs to carbonate slowly, it will often need protection with the help of hessian sheets.
