Made in Cumbria, our lime plaster (Eden Skim Coat) is produced via the hot mix method. Mixed at ratio of 2:1 (sand:quicklime).

Lime plaster is a traditional internal finishing plaster, applied over base coats of lime mortar or insulated lime. Can also be used for skimming onto plasterboard, for this the boards would need to be primed first with Baumit Premium Primer (DG27).

The lime plaster should be applied at less than 2mm coats at anyone time, a second pass can be done 2-3 hours later (this depends on temperature and humidity in the room)

Coverage:

22kg bucket covers approximately 4-5m² (allowing for 2 x 2mm passes)

Lime Mortar – Premixed

Made in Cumbria, our lime mortar is produced via the dry slaked hot mix method. Mixed at ratio of 3:1 (sand:quicklime) and supplied unhaired.

The lime mortar is used for backing coats of lime plaster and lime render, scratch coats will need hair or fibres adding to the mix when knocking the mortar back up for reinforcement. Also used for internal and external building/bedding, pointing and parging/torching (add a Pozzolan for external use or damp internal conditions).

For internal final finish see Lime Plaster (Eden Skim Coat).

Lime Mortar Colour Options (for pointing)

Three colour options are available as premixed lime mortars, these would just need to be knocked up before use and pozzolan added if needed:

1 Eden Standard – Nosterfield sharp sand and -3mm kibble quicklime

2 Eden Fine Yellow – Appleton Yellow sand blended with limestone dust and -3mm kibble quicklime

3 Eden Fine Red – Red plastering sand blended with limestone dust and -3mm kibble quicklime

Lime Mortar Coverage:

Render/plaster scratch coats @15mm thick = 39kg/m²

Render/plaster float coats @10mm thick = 26kg/m²

Re-pointing stonework = Approximately 26kg/m²

Re-pointing brickwork (assuming 10mm wide x 20mm deep joint) = Approximately 8kg/m² (including 10% waste)

Brick laying – 1000kg of mortar will lay 900-1000 bricks (no waste allowed)

Stone bedding – 1000kg of mortar will bed approximately 5 m³ of stone

Roof parging/torching – Approximately 22kg of lime mortar (dependent on slate & lath).

Pozzolan

Traditionally, volcanic ash, brick dust and other forms of burnt clays were used as additives in hot lime mixes and today this is refined in the form of Argical-M 1000. The term ‘pozzolan’ originates from the Italian town of Pozzuoli where volcanic ash was added during Roman times.

We recommend adding a pozzolan between 5% – 10% by volume depending on the time of year, exposure and use.

Quantity required for gauging into pre-mixed mortars:

Insulating Lime Plaster

Insulating lime plaster is a breathable insulation which can be applied directly on to the interior external walls as well as internal walls. The insulation is applied in a wet form, normally with the aid of a harling trowel, but some builders use a conventional float. The insulation can be built up in layers, at a maximum of 20-25mm at any one point, once dry another layer can then be applied.
The first coat can be left quite rough as it will aid the cohesion of the following layer. The second layer can be smoothed off an hour or two later so the skim coat will be easier to apply.

Generally people tend to apply a 50mm backing coat plus a 2-4mm skim coat, followed by a lime wash finish. It has been known for some architects to specify 100mm in four coats, but from feedback that we are receiving, 50mm is achieving some wonderful results.

46mm of insulating lime plaster has a Thermal conductivity (Lamda Value) 0.113 W/(mK)
Results c/o National Physical Laboratory specimen QM398 reference: 2010120038/1

Health & Safety Information

Eye protection must be worn at all times

It is advisable to wear gloves- nitrile/ latex are desirable

Masks are advisable when taking materials out of the bag

Mixing of the Insulation

The materials for the insulation come in three separate bags. The materials can be mixed in a paddle mixer (preferable as less splashback) or a belle mixer. The contents require a thorough mix (15-20 mins) before application. The walls need to have been brushed down of any loose materials then given a wash down half an hour before applying the first layer. The second layer is generally applied a week later once the first layer has dried (turned white), this depends on the temperature/humidity and how dry the walls are. Before applying the second layer the first layer should be dampened.

Render mesh – Alkali Resistant Fibre Glass Mesh

Render mesh is used to reinforce plasters and renders to minimise the likelihood of shrinkage or movement cracks. It can be applied across vulnerable joints and corners of windows, doors and across the whole surface of newly rendered or plastered walls.

When applying backing coat plasters onto carrier boards like Woodfibre or Wood Wool boards it’s advised to “sandwich” the render mesh into the backing coat. This will reinforce the plaster to minimise the chance of shrinkage or movement cracks at the joints of the carrier boards.

Available in either 160gm or 145gm
4 mm mesh (160gm) – 50m x 1.0 m
10 mm mesh (145gm) – 50m x 1.0 m
Also supplied by the running metre

Render mesh for thin coat plaster and render systems tends to be the 4mm (160gm), when reinforcing thicker traditional types of mortar the 10mm (145gm) is used.

Ideal for reinforcing external render particularly around openings or areas of traditional weakness.

It can be used to stabilise unstable surfaces, as well as cover and help prevent cracking.

It’s a flexible lattice made from woven glass-fibre strands offering incredible strength when embedded into base coat render.

The render reinforcing fibreglass mesh is made out of alkaline resistant glass yarns and has been tested to DIN EN ISO 13934-1 tensile strength standards.

Easy to install, by embedding it in to wet base coat render especially for large surface areas.

Durable and Reliable.

Light and easy to transport.

Adaptable to uneven surfaces.

Only simple tools required. (Scissors / Utility Knife).

Cardewmires Washed Quarry Sand

Cardewmires quarry sand is a 0-4mm grit sand that’s used in our standard hot lime mortar, but can also be used for making other mortars and screeds. Available in tonne bags or 25kg bags.

Nosterfield Washed River Sand

Nosterfield river sand is a 0-4mm grit sand that’s used for making hot lime mortars, but can also be used for making other mortar mixes and screeds. Available in tonne bags or 25kg bags.

Appleton Yellow Sand

Appleton Yellow Sand is a 0-2mm building sand that’s used for making hot lime mortar blends mixed with washed sharp sand, but also as a general building sand. Available in tonne bags.

Limestone Dust

Limestone dust is 0-4mm granitic limestone dust, it’s highly versatile and a decent substitute for sharp sand. Limestone dust is crushed limestone that can be used as a sub-base for paving and artificial grass. Due to its fine consistency it can be easily compacted and makes for a smooth, flat and firm surface for various applications. 4mm to dust limestone can also be used more widely in construction, for example as a binding agent added to MOT type 1 where the aggregate is too loose.
Available in tonne bags.

Sawn oak – The longest lasting and strongest of sawn laths, but not as strong or as long lasting as riven oak – a good compromise.

Sawn larch (durable softwood) – Untreated naturally durable softwood with a very low knot content. Good value for money.

Supplied in bundles of 50 which are 4ft long – each bundle covers roughly 2m² (sawn)
Timber Laths are used for the repair or creation of lath and plaster walls and ceilings, supplied as machine sawn.

Timber Laths are still used today in building construction to form a base or groundwork for plaster, but modern lath and plaster applications are mostly limited to conservation projects.

A lath or slat is a thin, narrow strip of straight wood used on lath and plaster walls and ceilings to hold plaster. Lath has expanded to mean any type of backing material for plaster. This includes metal wire mesh or expanded metal that is applied to a timber framework which plaster is applied. For use with lime mortars we only recommend using timber laths.

One of the key elements of lath, whether wooden slats or wire mesh, are the openings or gaps that allow plaster to ooze behind and form a mechanical bond to the lath.
